Causes of Watery Eyes
- Excess tear production, often triggered by irritation
- Blockages, narrowing, or misalignment in the tear drainage system
- A combination of factors affecting both tear production and drainage
About
About Watery Eyes
Watery eyes occur when there is too much tear production or when the tear drainage system isn’t working properly.
This can cause tears to build up and overflow onto the face, even during everyday activities. The problem may be triggered by irritation, blocked or narrowed tear ducts, or changes in eyelid position. Although often more of a nuisance than a danger, persistent watery eyes should be assessed, as treatment depends on addressing the underlying cause.
Treatment
Treatment for Watery Eyes
The first step is to identify what is causing the problem. If excess tear production is to blame, treating the source of irritation often helps. If the drainage system is blocked or narrowed, specialist procedures may be required to restore normal tear flow. Treatment is always personalised, with the aim of relieving symptoms and restoring everyday comfort.
Patient Journey
What you can expect under our care

Consultation & Examination
We begin with a detailed assessment of your tear ducts, eyelids, and the surface of the eye to understand what is causing the excess watering. This may involve gentle tests to check how well tears are draining.
Your Treatment
As there are many causes for a watery eyes, the treatment offered is based on treating the cause. This may involve addressing irritation or dryness prescribing eye drops, or carrying out a minor procedure to open the tear duct opening, if narrow. Occasionally more substantial procedures to bypass a blocked tear duct, may be indicated. In other cases, corrective eyelid surgery may be advised.
Recovery & Follow-up
Most treatments involve little downtime, though surgical options may require a short recovery period. Follow-up appointments are arranged to monitor healing, confirm that symptoms have improved, and provide ongoing support if needed.

Contact usWatery eyes happen when there’s too much tear production, a problem with the tear drainage system, or both. Irritation, blockages, or narrowing of the tear ducts are common causes.
Your specialist will examine the eyelids, tear ducts, and drainage system to identify what’s causing the imbalance. In some cases, further tests may be recommended.
Mild cases due to temporary irritation often improve on their own. However, persistent or severe watery eyes usually need medical assessment and, in some cases, surgical correction.
Most cases are not serious, but they can be uncomfortable and disruptive. Persistent watering should be assessed by a specialist to rule out underlying problems with tear drainage.
Treatment depends on the cause. It may involve addressing irritation, correcting eyelid position, or performing procedures to clear or bypass a blocked tear duct.
